EVLT - Endovenous Laser Therapy
How Does It Work?
Treatment begins when a small incision is made at the treatment site. A thin catheter is inserted into the skin under ultrasound guidance, and positioned inside the abnormal vein. A laser or radiofrequency treatment fiber is then inserted through the catheter. Laser or radiofrequency energy is directed at the vein. As this energy reaches the vein, it burns and cauterizes it, causing the vein to close completely. Over time, this vein is replaced with scar tissue and no longer triggers adverse symptoms.
What Is Treatment Like?
Each treatment takes 45-60 minutes to complete. While some patients are able to eliminate their varicose veins in a single treatment, others require multiple sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Several sessions are almost always guaranteed if patients are addressing several varicose veins.
Following treatment, patients typically have to wear compression stockings for 14 days. Skin burns are a possible side effect of treatment, in addition to painful, burning, or prickling sensations below the skin.
Varicose veins don’t just pose aesthetic discomfort; they can also lead to uncomfortable symptoms that affect an individual’s overall quality of life.
